by Nell Dunn Synopsis
This funny and touching play is set in the ‘Turkish Room’ of a run-down public baths in the East End of London in the 1981. Five women regularly gather here to ‘bare their bodies, souls and fantasies’. This women only zone gives them the space to recover from everyday pressures and the confidence to share their individual and various experiences of life, love, sex and the world. Although their discussions and revelations centre on stories of male oppression (symbolically represented by Bill, who is excluded from their presence) the women are still optimistic that they can overcome the negativity of destructive relationships to find happiness and fulfilment in the future.
The language in the play is sometimes earthy and shocking but we learn to understand and accept this as we get to know the characters.
